Mashhad is revered as the burial place of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam in Shia Islam, who died (according to Shia tradition, was martyred) in the area. Over centuries, countless traditions and hadiths have attributed immense spiritual merit and miraculous blessings to pilgrims visiting his shrine, with stories of answered prayers and divine favors surrounding the site.

At the table: Players could investigate a mysterious miracle or supernatural event occurring among the throngs of pilgrims, drawing them into the city's most sacred traditions.

Alexander the Great and the Founding of Sanabad

Ancient Greek and Muslim historians variously claim that Alexander the Great passed through, resided in, or even founded the ancient city of Sanabad, now Mashhad. Some Islamic traditions link Imam Reza’s burial site to a city founded by Dhu al-Qarnayn, a legendary figure often identified with Alexander.

At the table: A quest for a lost artifact or secret beneath Mashhad could tie modern events to legends of Alexander and ancient Persian history.

The Dome That Survived: Sanctuary in Times of Invasion

During the Mongol invasions that devastated much of Khurasan, Mashhad’s shrine was spared from destruction, with survivors of neighboring massacres seeking refuge there. This has led to traditions that the site is divinely protected, and that the shrine’s dome and grounds possess supernatural sanctuary.

At the table: The legend of inviolable sanctuary could play into an adventure where the party must protect or find refuge in the shrine during a supernatural siege.
